[edit] Understand
The Nord department was created from the western halves of the historical counties of Flanders and Hainaut. The eastern halves being in Belgium. This explains the long thin shape of the department and the many Flemish sounding place names. It is the France's most populous department. It has several industrial towns based on the former coal mining industry.
