Niagara Falls (New York)
From Wikitravel
- See Niagara Falls (Ontario) for information about the Canadian side of the falls
Niagara Falls [1] is in the Niagara Frontier region of New York state.
[edit] Understand
The Niagara Falls consist of three sections. The large Canadian falls – with their distinctive curved shape – are also known as the Horseshoe Falls. They are separated by Goat Island from the American Falls, which are separated by a small island at their south end, from the narrow Bridal Veil falls. Each side offers a different perspective. The American side offers great views of the Canadian Horseshoe falls and the hotel skyline on the Canadian side. The Canadian side offers views of both the American and Horseshoe Falls. The Canadian side is usually the most popular due to its view of both falls and the number of attractions and hotels. Although the Canadian side of the falls has more to do and see, it is always best to visit both sides to maximize your experience.

- Buffalo-Niagara International Airport (Code: BUF), in Buffalo then drive, bus, or taxi to Niagara Falls (about 20-30 minutes).

- Myrtle Beach Direct Air offers twice weekly, non-stop service to Myrtle Beach. On site airport parking is free.[2]

[edit] Get around
Car: Definitely the best option to get around. There is a bus line that covers the region (NFTA), but it is nothing special. There is no subway.
Feet: If you are staying downtown, the casino is in walking distance to the Falls and the bridge to Canada. You can really do a lot without a car once you get to the immediate vicinity of the Falls. The toll for walking the bridge to Canada is $0.50, paid on the Canadian side coming into the US. It can be paid in American or Canadian quarters.

- Judi's is over by the Factory Outlets (across the road) and is a greasy little bar that has a great wing special on Sunday nights (I think it's .10 or .15 cents a wing). But, being that you are so close, you should head to Buffalo for Duff's or Anchor Bar (birthplace of the chicken wing).
- Fortuna's at 827 19th Street has the best Italian food in the city. Main courses include handmade gnocchi, ravioli, steaks, veal, poultry, and fresh seafood. They use the freshest ingredients and even their salad dressings are all made there and there is a substantial wine list.

- Misty Dog Grill is the place for cheap eats. With over 100 menu items, you can't go wrong. From several different styles of hot dogs to venison, ostrich, buffalo, and kobe beef burgers, this is the best place to eat lunch. Beef On Weck, a Buffalo favorite, is also available here.
- Punjabi Hut is the only real Indian food around town. Very homely cooking. 26 Niagara St. Niagara Falls NY 14303
[edit][add listing] Drink
The drinking age in New York is 21, however, due to the fact that Niagara Falls straddles the border, many 19 and 20 year-olds cross the border into Canada so that they would be able to legally drink.
[edit][add listing] Sleep
There are not really any major luxury hotels in the area, but a new hotel is now at Seneca Niagara Casino. There are several other nice looking hotels downtown by the Falls, and then a series of motels on Niagara Falls Boulevard, including several $20/night fleabag specials (where they really always charge you more than that anyway).
Downtown the best hotels are Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, Doubletree Hotel & Conference Center and The Red Coach Inn. Radisson on the River is coming soon on Buffalo Avenue and is located on the Niagara River overlooking the North Grand Island Bridge.
There is a Victorian B+B (Manchester House) on Main Street a few blocks from the Falls at 653 Main Street. Lewiston also has a ncie looking B+B, but this is a little drive from everything (very cute little town however). Niagara on the Lake is always worth the drive (Canada).
- Niagara Falls Hostel, 1101 Ferry Avenue, +1 716 282-3700, [18]. Beds start at $18 per night.
[edit] Get out
Americans and Canadians can cross the border passport-free until new US immigration rules take effect no earlier than Jan 1, 2008, to see the falls from the Canadian side. There are numerous other waterfalls in western New York (all much smaller), notably the 3 falls of the Genesee River within Letchworth State Park.
