Newport is a relatively small city in the northeast kingdom in Vermont. It is very close to the Canadian border (less than 7 miles) and as a result is a favorite spot for Canadian tourists living in southern Quebec. It is very beautiful, and it has the largest lake in Orleans county, lake memphremagog (lac Memphremagog) which is a transborder lake and can be used to acces the larger city of Magog, Quebec.
There is a small airport and it is expanding rapidly, with the introduction of jet service targeted for 2016. At the present time the airport features only turboprop service. It is expected that the airport will begin accepting turboprop flights from canada as soon as a customs and border security office is established. Until then, the best way in is interstate 91 with direct connection to montreal to the north and Massachusetts to the south.
Lake Memphremagog - Newport is on the shoreline of the large lake and has a wooden boardwalk that can be walked or biked that leads over the water. It is also rumored that the lake holds a lake monster, Memphre.
There are a few bars on Main Street which are also just a short walk away from the waterfront boardwalks near Lake Memphremagog.
