Narcondam Island

Norcondam Island

This place is supposed the most remote Indian land. Also claimed by Myanmar. It is located in the Andaman Sea, NE of the Andaman archipelago. The only human occupation there are guards from the Indian Government. The island is famous for its transparent waters, its unique (and protected) wildlife, and its sleeping volcano.

The main Andaman island is 114 km away, on which is Port Blair, the local hub.Daily flights from Chennai and Kolkata on Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Red (fares start ~Rs 5,000 one way).

The two volcanic Islands, Barren Island and Narcondum Island foreign tourists may be allowed to visit Barren Island on board vessels but no landing ashore. Govt Administration would provide escort to the tourists visiting the Islands. For Narcondum Islands it has been decided that it may be opened to foreign tourists for diving and unescorted day visits.

  • Narcondam Island Wildlife Sanctuary It is a protected reserve. The island has a lot of rats, and goats had been introduced earlier as a source of protein for the camp, but had run feral.

The highlight birds were the Narcondam Hornbills and the Pied Imperial Pigeons. It was the nesting time for the hornbills, so they are found both at nests as well as feeding at large fig trees. This bird only exists on Narcondam.

  • Diving One can found mantas, reef sharks,hammerheads, whales and large marlin in these waters. Great visibility allow you to see sponges,coral and varied underwater rock formations, to explore. Beware strong currents around Narcondam.
