Morganton was the county seat of Fannin county, Georgia in the 1800s. The county seat was moved to the town of Blue Ridge due to the train establishing a depot in Blue Ridge.

Located on the shores of Lake Blue Ridge, which is a recreational lake surrounded by mountains. Visit Morganton Beach which features a sandy beach area for swimming, a boat ramp and camping facilities.
