Methven (Māori: Piwakawaka) is a small town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located near the western edge of the Canterbury Plains, 35 kilometres north of Ashburton. The town with just over 1000 people is home to the Mt Hutt Ski Area [1]

Get in[edit]

Christchurch Airport has regular flight to Australia, New Zealand and daily connection to Dubai and Singapore. The Airport is around 90km from the town and unless you have rented a car from the airport the only other way is the Christchurch - Methven bus running daily during winter and 3 time weekly during summer [2]. Busses will pick you up from Christchurch Airport or in the City and bring you to anywhere in Methven, Busses although being scheduled daily don't run unless their are booking made at least 12hrs prior to the departure time. A oneway trip to Methven costs NZ$42 per adult or NZ$25 for a child.

Get around[edit]

From all accommodation in Methven it is around a 10 minutes or less walk into the center of the town.

During the Winter season a free Village Cruiser bus goes around the town every 30 minutes. Simply hail the bus to get on and tell the driver anytime you want to get off. [4]

Methven has a wide range of accommodation properties including hotel resorts, ski lodges, luxury B&Bs, motels, backpackers and camping grounds offering more than 2,000 beds to those visiting the Methven Mount Hutt region all year round. Mt Hutt Ski Area and the majority of ski fields in the Canterbury region do not offer on-mountain accommodation; Methven/ Mt Hutt Village is the accommodation base for ski holidays.
