[edit] Changing the wording

So, I've got two things I'd like to change about this prompt that shows up at the bottom of every edit page.

 • I don't like the indirect syntax in the copyright warning. I'd prefer something more active and clear.
 • I'd like to add a pointer to our external links guidelines.

Here's my proposed alternative:

All contributions to {{SITENAME}} must be licensed under the $2 (see $1 for details). By clicking "Save" below, you acknowledge that you are adding your own words and that you agree to the site license. If you don't want your writing to be edited by other users or redistributed on other Web sites, don't submit it here.
In rare cases you can add public domain text or text available under an Open Content license compatible with our own; if you have any doubt, then it is probably not compatible. Publishing text on a Web site or in a book does not make it "public domain".DO NOT SUBMIT COPYRIGHTED WORK WITHOUT PERMISSION!
Wikitravel has strong guidelines on links to external web sites. We prefer links to official sites for cities, hotels, museums, restaurants, etc. Links to booking engines, hotel and restaurant aggregator sites, or other third-party sites are not welcome and will be deleted.

I like it, but since people are more likely to read bullets than a paragraph, and since most people won't read a lot of text, what about consolidating a bit, such as the following?
All contributions to Wikitravel must be licensed under the $2 (see $1 for details). By clicking "Save" below, you acknowledge that you agree to the site license as well as the following.
 • If you do not want your contribution to be re-used on other web sites and modified by other users please do not submit!
 • All contributions must be your own original work or work that is explicitly licensed under a CC-SA compatible license.
 • Text and/or images published on another web site or in a book are copyrighted and should not be submitted here!
 • Wikitravel has strong guidelines on links to external web sites. Links to booking engines, hotel and restaurant aggregator sites, or other third-party sites will be deleted.
A few of these bullets are a bit too strong - for example, content published on another web site may be able to be used here - but for the most part the people reading these guidelines are the ones who won't have a very good understanding of copyleft, so it's probably safe to use overly strong language. -- Ryan 14:49, 27 November 2006 (EST)
I like it a lot. If I had any changes, I'd try to change "content", which I think is Web development jargon, to something a little more concrete. "Text and/or pictures"? I'll happily be overruled on that, though. Otherwise, I'm happy with this text. --Evan 22:03, 27 November 2006 (EST)
How about "contribution"? That should cover text, pictures, or anything else, and I think it reads better than "If you do not want your text...". I've updated the suggested text, but feel free to change it further. -- Ryan 22:19, 27 November 2006 (EST)
 • bump* Can we make this change? -- Ryan 16:46, 29 November 2006 (EST)
How about "work"? But I'm OK with "contribution". --Evan 07:42, 6 December 2006 (EST)
Should Text and/or images published on another web site or in a book are copyrighted and should not be submitted here! read "cannot" rather than "should not"? -- Andrew H. (Sapphire) 02:31, 8 December 2006 (EST)
