Manipal is situated on a hill about 5 km from Udupi. What used to be a jungle has given way to and international University Complex thanks to the dedication of Dr. T.M.A. Pai, a leading educationist. Manipal is a coastal town in the western ghats region of Karnataka in the Udupi district. It is an international University town home to Manipal University (formerly MAHE - Manipal Academy of Higher Education).

Climate: It has a humid to pleasant climate throughout most of the year with heavy rainfall during the monsoon months (May - September).

Manipal is a twin city to Udupi.

By air: The closest air-port is Mangalore which is 65 km from here, Which is connected to Mumbai and Bangalore. Prepaid taxi service is available from airport (booking counter is on the left side of exit door of the terminal building) to Manipal for Rs 850.00 for non air-conditioned cab.

By Train: The closest railway station is the Udupi railway station which is 3 km away. It is one of the major stations in the konkan railway track and is connected to most of the major South Indian cities, including Mumbai.

By bus: Buses ply from Bangalore and Mangalore directly to Tiger Circle at the very heart of Manipal. Apart from this most of the South Indian cities and Mumbai are connected to Udupi which is about 5 km from Manipal.

It is a small town so mode of travel is either taxi or get an auto, though walking around the town would not be a bad option.

Apart from the scenic beauty of this place the only other attraction is its university. Manipal has colleges ranging from a top Indian medical college, engineering college to a college for media. Name the field and it would not be a very distant possibility of this place not boasting a college in that field.

Because of such a cosmopolitan background it is not very difficult to find your taste of food. There is also a hotel management institute by manipal with its own hotel 'Valley View' which has a coffee shop and restaurant where you get any kind of food of your choice.

Manipal medical college has a twinning program in Melaka in Malaysia so you can find lots of malaysian people here so their food is available too.

Restaurants in Manipal are cheap and hygienic, so food is the last thing on your mind.

Secret Garden the new Restaurant which would open doors in the month of September is already slated to be a big hit with their impeccable ambiance and excellent but affordable food..

Few hotels which are frequently used by manipal students are Dollops, Basil, Parota Point etc.

There are many pubs to support the night life so you get your drinks too. Most famous among them are: Deetee(mainly patronised by the Engineering students). Other places are New Deetee, Sanman, Guzzlers, Manohar, Cocks and Mocks and Open Bar (boasts the cheapest prices) and Twist (famous for its psychadelic music and edible food)

It is a tertiary care hospital with all the departments of medicine and surgery. There is a seperate department of cancer treatment by name Shiridi Sai Baba Cancer Hospital

There are quite a few beaches very close to Manipal so you can get out there and chill out in the sand.
