Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain and the focal point of the sprawling Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, located to the west of Tokyo. A perfectly symmetrical volcanic cone, the mountain is a near-mythical national symbol immortalized in countless works of art, and climbing it is a rite of passage for locals and visitors alike. Dharamsala is a hill station in Himachal Pradesh. Once mooted to be the summer capital of India, Dharamsala became the home of the Tibetan Government in Exile in 1959 and is now a very popular hang-out for foreigners and students of Buddhism. (more...)

Taiwan-China flights start

The first regular direct cross-strait in six decades have started flying between 8 cities in mainland China and 5 in Taiwan. Initially, operations are restricted to 36 flights a week on weekends (Fri-Mon) only, but all, including foreigners, can use them. (more...)

Big Sur ablaze

California's Big Sur region, long popular with travelers, is experiencing a severe forest fire that has burned thousands of acres of forest and destroyed many homes and businesses. The Pacific Coast Highway through the region is closed because of the fire, which is only 3% contained at this time. (more...)

New Tokyo Subway Line Opens

A new subway line, the Fukutoshin Line, has opened in the western part of Tokyo, Japan. The new line will primarily relieve congestion from the nearby Yamanote and Saikyo lines on the busy corridor between Ikebukuro, Shinjuku and Shibuya. (more...)
