Maiduguri, also known locally as Yerwa, is a large city in Northeastern Nigeria and capital of the Borno State
There have been no passenger services to Maiduguri, the government wants to reestablish the rail link and have made several promises of renewed traffic "soon". Don't hold your breath though.
Traveling by car is possible, national roads A3, which continues towards N'Djamena, and A4 passes by here.
Maiduguri is less plagued by sectarian violence compared to cities in central Nigeria but was attacked during the religious violence in 2009 initiated by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram leaving several dead. Government curfews are quite common.
THIS REGION HAS THE STRICTEST SHARIA LAW ENFORCEMENT. IF YOU ARE LGBT, LEAVE OR THEY WILL KILL YOU, NOT IMPRISON OR FINE YOU. THEY WILL THROW STONES AT YOU UNTIL YOU DIE. THE OTHER GOVERNMENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO HELP YOU. THE BOKO HARAM HAS THE FULL POWER HERE, SO NO EMBASSIES WILL BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING.
