The Southern Alps provide a magnificent backdrop to the Mackenzie Country. There are many lakes in the region, with Lake Tekapo (right on the main highway) being very beautiful. The jagged snow-capped peak of Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand, can be seen (with a bit of hiking) in Mount Cook National Park.
