• Hanging Rock Recreation Reserve. The movie Picnic at Hanging Rock made this location famous. A private girls school had an excursion here back, with two of the girls and a teacher going missing and never being found. Two other girls who were found had no memory of the events. The school closed, and the school principal committed suicide at the rock. The area is well developed, with walking trails, lookouts, interpretive displays, large picnic areas and barbecues, and a cafe. A short exploration of the area with its crevices and sharp drops will show you how easy it would be to disappear here. There is little danger staying on the well marked trails though. Take a picnic. Entry is $10 per car, or $4 per person without a car.
