Hammersmith and Fullham is a borough in west London, variously well known for its green, its market, its diverse population and for being the home of the BBC.

[edit] Understand

Shepherd's Bush has long been a first home in London to second and first generation immigrants. While this is less true today than in the past, the area undergoing gradual gentrification, beautification and development, there is still a substantial expatriate population (including a great many travelling Antipodeans).

Culturally, Shepherd's Bush is well known as the home of BBC Television, the Television Centre located on Wood Lane in the White City sub-district. The Bush was also the fictional home of Steptoe & Son at Oil Drum Lane. The members of two influential British bands, The Who (rock) and the Sex Pistols (punk) grew up in Shepherd's Bush.

Shepherd's Bush is thought by some to have been named after a common area on which shepherds were said to graze their sheep. However, it is also thought that it could have been named after a local identity, the area being recorded in 1635 as Sheppard's Bush Green.

[edit] Get in

The London Underground (Transport for London) [1] should be able to take you just about anywhere you need to go. Buses are also available.

[edit] By tube

The nearest Underground [2] stations are

  • The Picadilly Line (dark blue color) will take you to Hammersmith Station and goes through to London, terminating at Cockfosters station.
  • The District Line (dark green color) will take you to Hammersmith Station from various parts of the London area, however you must be careful which District Line train you are getting on, as some District Line trains do not pass through Hammersmith Station. Fulham is also served by the District Line and is on the Wimbledon branch (change at Earls Court if necessary). Fulham Broadway Station is in the centre of Fulham, whereas Parsons Green and Putney Bridge Stations are better for south Fulham.
  • The Hammersmith & City Line (pink color) will take you from Barking Station, travels through London, stops in the district at Shepherd's Bush Market and Goldhawk Road Stations and terminates at Hammersmith Station. This line has a stop at Paddington Station, in case you take the Heathrow Express from Heathrow Airport. This station is separate from the Picadilly and District Line stations, and is across the street from the main Hammersmith station.
  • The Central Line stops at Shepherd's Bush Station
