Litoral
From Wikitravel
Paranagua is a city in litoral of Parana.
[edit] Get in
Travel from Curitiba by bus, historic railway, or automobile. I don't know that Paranagua has commercial air service but it probably does. Paranagua is linked by passenger launch to Guarequecaba, Ihla do Mel, and Ilha do Superagui. Other connections are Curitiba via Antonina or Morretes. There is also Pontal do Parana on the coast opposite Ilha do Mel.
[edit] Get around
There are roads and scheduled passenger boats to nearby communites and points of interest. Car rentals are also available. It is easier to get to Guaraquecaba from Paranagua by boat than to drive there from Curitiba.
[edit][add listing] See
This city is 358 years old; one of the oldest in Brasil. Guaraquecaba may have been settled a little earlier but lost out as main port in the area due to Paranagua's finer anchorage. Antonina and Morretes were also early settlements and have similar historic districts and attractions. See the cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, historic port area and anchorage in the river which has been renovated somewhat; much must have been lost but much remains as well. Historic buildings are also distributed in other parts of the city. There is a visitors center on the waterfront in the building that serves as ticket office for the passenger launches.
[edit][add listing] Do
Check out the local museums. Take side trips to Ilha do Mel, Guaraquecaba, Antonina, and Morretes. Ilha do Mel is a National Park of some kind, no cars are allowed on the island and there are historic forts to visit; famed among Brasilians for being unspoiled. Guarquecaba is home to a recently created reserve for the Atlantic Forest which has been destroyed along most of the southern half of Brasil's coast. Antonina and Morretes were colonial settlements and routes by which freight from Paranagua was carried to Curitiba and the interior of Parana using mules and carts over extremely rough mountain trails. Mainly freight was lightered to Antonina and mule trained to Curitiba. Visit the modern resort beach facilities at Pontal do Parana.
[edit][add listing] Buy
Handicrafts, black pottery casseroles made as in colonial times for slow cooking the local stews, wide range of imports but no duty free zone for the public.
[edit][add listing] Eat
Sea food can be had fresh daily. As in much of Brasil the best/economical places to eat are the "por quilo" or all you can eat restaurants; these are sprinkled throughout the downtown area.
[edit][add listing] Drink
For the interested there are many artesanal cachacas (sugar cane liquor) coming to market in Parana.
[edit][add listing] Sleep
Several reasonable places downtown including a hostel right on the waterfront next to the passenger boat ticket office.
