Limerick (Irish: Luimneach) [1] is a city in Ireland's Shannon Region.

Limerick is probably Ireland's last unspoiled city. From a tourist point of view it might not seem to hold the same allure as Cork or Galway, but as it is twenty minutes by bus from Shannon Airport, it is easy to spend a few hours in Limerick at least.

Limerick has a host of badly-publicised attractions - the city's so-called "co-ordination office" is too busy warding off negative publicity about the city's crime to put out positive messages about all that the Shannonside city has to offer.

For a weekend break: Friday evening: Go for dinner in one of the city's many good restaurants. Bella Italia and Freddy's Bistro are particularly good. Have an after-dinner drink in the atmospheric Nancy Blake's.

Saturday Get up early on Saturday morning and visit the Milk Market to see all the city has to offer in the line of home-made cheeses, chocolate, pastries, breads and fresh fruit and vegetables. Any foodie will love this, and French's pancake stall will quell any early hunger pangs. If you haven't indulged in a pancake, visit The Wild Onion cafe for a massive, American-style breakfast that will keep you going all day. This place is Limerick's best-kept secret. If you're not too full to walk afterwards, take a look around the Hunt Museum which has some interesting artifacts, or check out www.belltable.ie to see what's on in Limerick theatre.

Sunday Go for a walk around the beautiful University of Limerick campus (three miles outside the city with a regular bus service). The campus has the river Shannon at its heart and you will often see herons and other wild birds around the river. A new bridge and some interesting architecture provide beautiful views. For a good Sunday lunch go back into town and visit one of the city's many hotels or pub/restaurants.

While Limerick City does not have an airport, Shannon Airport serves the area and is located within 25km of Limerick City along the N18. Shannon Airport is an International Airport that services locations both within Europe and to the United States. Daily flights from Shannon Airport to New York, Newark and Chicago are operated by Delta, Aer Lingus and Continental Airlines while Ryanair mainly services destinations in the UK and Europe.

Limerick City is served very well by Bus Eireann who operate services to and from Limerick city to Athlone, Balbriggan, Cork, Drogheda, Dublin, Dundalk, Galway, Navan, Sligo and Waterford.

Limerick is connected to the Irish Rail network by Colbert Station which is located on Parnell Street in Limerick City. Limerick City is connected by rail (either directly or indirectly) with the main towns of Belfast, Dublin, Rosslare, Cork, Tralee and Ennis.

While Limerick is not particularly well served by car rental companies, Shannon Airport is. All the major car rental companies in Ireland have locations at Shannon. Shannon Airport is easily accessible from Limerick by Bus or Taxi services.

Public Bus services are available in Limerick but the city is quite contained and everything is within walking distance.
