Lier [1] is a city of about 35,000 inhabitants in the province of Antwerp, Belgium.

Understand[edit]

Get in[edit]

Lier can be conveniently reached by car. Highways aren't that close. The city is located halfway between the E19 (Antwerp to Brussels) and the E313 (Antwerp to Liège). The national roads connect the town with the highways and other close-by cities, such as the N10 to Antwerp, N14 to Mechelen and the N13 to the E313. Like many towns in Belgium it's a problem though to get rid of your car in the center.

Lier is connected by rail to Antwerp, Mechelen, Herentals, Aarschot, Leuven and Brussels. Due to the close proximity of Antwerp, a reliable connection has been established with Lier, as trains frequently commute between the cities. During peak hours, there is a significant increase in available trains to accommodate the many students and working people commuting to Antwerp. Outside the peak hours, only one train each hour departs to Mechelen/Brussels, and it is often overcrowded. You can bypass this by travelling to Antwerp first, then boarding another train to Brussels.

The train station is located just outside the city center.

Get around[edit]

Public transportation[edit]

The public transport company De Lijn [2] has a number of bus lines through Lier, which also connect the city with all other towns in its vicinity. Some buses will take you all the way to bigger cities such as Antwerp, but it would be wise to opt for trains instead, since the traffic congestion can cause serious delays. Bus tickets can be purchased at the train station, or you can pay a slightly higher fare to the bus driver.

You can consult the train schedule and purchase tickets in the train station, or use the website of the Belgian rail company NMBS [3].

On foot[edit]

Arguably the best method to discover Lier. Most places of interest are in the center of the city and are located within mere minutes of one another.

Where the medieval city walls used to be, one can now find a pleasant, forested walking path called "de Vesten" that circles around the city. Especially during summer days, this path is very popular with the locals do go walking, jogging, or cycling; motorized vehicles are not allowed here, with the exception of emergency vehicles. The river "Nete" runs next to this path for the major part.

Bicycle[edit]

An alternative way to explore Lier, is by bike. Most streets will have their own bicycle lanes, sometimes even on both sides. Pay extra attention to traffic signs, since there are some one-way streets even though they may not look like it.

Lier is a popular hub on many cycling routes that go through Flanders. This applies to recreational biking, as well as professional biking. Be wary of the latter group, since they are notorious for driving at fast speeds and often lack means of warning unwary pedestrians. During weekends and, by extension, throughout the summer, you will find many people cycling around and through Lier. Many pubs are conveniently located nearby the most popular bicycle lanes, in case you want to take a breather.

Bikes of all types - including tandems and electrical bikes - can be rented at a fair price. Charging stations for electric bikes can be found throughout the city, too.

For more information on bicycle rental, cycling maps and more, consult the Tourism Lier (Toerisme Lier) website [4].
