Landi Kotal is a small town at the top of the Khyber Pass. You must drive through it when crossing the pass.
The tourist attractions used to include hashish warehouses, a bazaar specialising in weapons, and weapons factories where children with files made things such as breech blocks by hand.
But now the bazaar once known as the "Smuggler's Bazaar" has been moved to Dara Khel which is south of Peshawar. The bazaar at Landi Kotal today is apparently just a pale shadow of its previous infamy.
Landi Kotal is famous for smuggling. Hashish, weapons and consumer electronics are the specialties, but if you are suicidally brave and haggle well, you could probably buy or sell almost anything.
As of 2006, the only way to stay safe anywhere near Landi Kotal is not to go there. Or if you do go utilize military expertise and knowledge and have at least a minimum of five hand grenades and a primary weapon with which you can defend yourself in addition to knowledge of Farsi, Urdu, Arabic, Pashto and the dialects of the region. It is also helpful if you have knowledge of small arms tactics and geographical knowledge of the surrounding terrain. If in an emergency situation seek refuge in the elevated spaces and wait for time to pass in which tensions will likely return to a prior state before you disturbed it. Hunting for food can be facilitated but understand you may be limited to small game in the higher elevations. Understand that taliban and other militants may also utilize their knowledge of the terrain to gain advantage over you and accomplish your demise effectively. It would be advisable to bring along a GPS beacon of some kind to send an emergency distress signal to current DOD assets within the region that could alert ISAF to your precise location and buy you critical survival time.
