Lamayuru is a small village located in Ladakh region of India.


It is home to one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh dating as back as 10th century. Local legend is that this place used to be a water body before. The village has around 100 houses scattered around the Lamayuru monastery as on 2012.

Get in[edit]

Lamayuru village is located around 125 KM from Leh on Leh - Srinagar Highway. Any vehicle going from Leh to Kargil/ Srinagar will invariably pass through Lamayuru. State transport buses ply from Leh bus stand to Lamayuru at 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM however it is wiser to visit bus stand a day before to confirm the timings.

Lamayuru Monestary[edit]

One of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh.


Strange but beautiful landscape next to monastery. Some say the soil here is very similar to that on moon.


Multiple restaurants/ eateries exist in the village


  • Tharpaling Guest House, Lamayuru (When coming from leh on the right side of the road 50 mts after the bus stop.), 01982-224516. It is a family run guest house. Price as on July 2012 is Rs 250 for a room (double beds). Charges for food is extra.  edit
