You can take the #44 bus to West Palm Beach, and then take Tri-Rail to Lake Worth. 
Tri-Rail has rail service to/from Mangonia Park & West Palm Beach all the way down to Miami.
Cabs are readily available at taxi stops around the city. PalmTran has local bus service to destinations around the county. 
Lake Worth beach has a pier with picnic tables and a restaurant. There are also shops and a public pool right near the beach. The beach has plenty of parking, and is usually very busy on the weekends.
Downtown Lake Worth has a new-agey kind of feel, with ample yoga studios, antique shops, and local fashion stores. Enjoy a stroll around the downtown area. First and third fridays of each month see the streets close off with live music and temporary shops set up. Every thursday night is biker night so idiots with motorcycles feel welcome downtown.
Surf shops, a news stand, antique shops, smoothie/natural food store, ice cream, starbucks, all are in the downtown area.
Italian, Greek, Pub food, Pizza, the "Taco Lady" Mexican Restaurant, Thai, Sushi - all are available in and around the few block radius of downtown lake worth.
Plenty of bars in the downtown area. Sneaker's on dixie highway is open until 5AM on weekends.
Four Seasons resort is on the intracoastal. If that's out of your price range, a short drive up and down dixie will provide you with a plethora of cheap motel choices.
If you are walking late at night, do not stray far from the downtown area. Lake Worth is notorious for its gang problem.
