Lake Bunyonyi.jpg

Lake Bunyonyi is a charming lake dotted with little islands in Western Uganda. The terraced landscape and vibrant colors make it almost cartoonish.

Get in[edit]

From Kabale, take a taxi or bodaboda to Rotindo Market (8 km, 20-25 minutes). From Rotindo you can hire a canoe or motorboat to the destination of your choice.

Look for young guy named Sunday. He is a local guide and can take you up for short walk to see almost whole lake from the hill opposite to the landing dock. Amazing view. You will pass trough the church and school to reach not yet finished Africa Explorers, owned by rasta named Yanik. You can chill, have a beer or two and enjoy nice chat. From the top you will see peaks of volcano mountains on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo. 2-3 hours hike in slow pace will cost you about 10 000 ugandan shillings (4$), which include the canoe transfer. Small tip will be appreciated. Recommended for a lazy day. The guy knows all the area and speaks English. You will find him near the landing dock, where all the boats/canoes are.

  • Byoona Amagara, Itambira Island. It used to be the nice budget place to stay with relaxed atmosphere, but this time is over. They claim it's a non-profit venture, where 100% of the proceeds are put into the local community through education and farming. This is not true, but this way you get more $$$ thinking that money goes to the right hands. They try to charge you on everything including hot shower, charging mobile/camera, watching a movie, etc. They give you free transport to the island but you have to pay for your way back, which is strange. I stayed one night only and went back to the mainland completely disappointed. It was low (rainy) season and wanted to negotiate the price for a long stay but they were not willing to take any offer. Unfriendly, avoid if possible.  edit
