Understand[edit]

Kutancane, also Kutacane or Kotacane, is a fairly big city with about 100 000 inhabitans built next to the main road going through the north Sumatra. It is a place where people, roads and transportations meets.

Get in[edit]

By bus: Minivans from Medan normally drop you off where you want. Local short distance buses to e.g. Ketambe depart from the market, at the market and along the main road there are a several different bus companies for longer distances. There is also a bus terminal slightly outside town where tickets can be bought and buses leave for longer distances as Medan and several places in Aceh (Jan 2016). Ask around to get the best price.

  • To/From south: There are a several buses leaving from Padang Bulan in Medan every day, taking about 6-9 hours depending on weather and traffic. Companies are BTN and Karsima. The Minivans mostly leave in the morning until noon and there is one in the night, around 10pm. There are two more companies on Padang Bulan offering shared Taxis (leave when full) for a slightly higher price. The same minivans from BTN or Karsima from Medan to Kutancane can also be taken from Berastagi if there is still a seat available. See article on Berastagi about where to enquire for a seat. There are also buses from Lake Toba and various different locations east and south from Kutancane. Price - 70 000 from Medan (Jan 2016).
  • To/From north: There is basically only one main road leading north passing the Ketambe, Blankenjeren and Takengon. However there are no buses or very few going further than Blankenjeren. The buses to Blankenjeren leaves daily between 9-10 o'clock and takes about 4-5 hours. There are many minivans and local public buses (15.000IDR) (mainly open trucks with benches in the back) going to Ketambe and different other villages leaving about twice an hour. It takes about an hour to get to Ketambe.

By airplane: Kutacane has a small airport which serves two destinations (Banda Aceh and Medan a several times a week for a cost of about 300 000 - 500 000. After a crash of an airplane from Medan in 2011 this route is cancelled. But airplanes are still going to/from Banda Aceh three times a week. It is a very small airplane and a special experience since you fly directly over the jungle. (Price 550.000IDR Sept 2015).
