Understand[edit]

Tropical forest of Ko Ra

Ko Ra (Ra Island) is located in Khura Buri district in Phang Nga Province on the Northern Andaman Coast coast of southwest Thailand. As a proposed national park, it is one of the last island-gems in Thailand. It is a large (12 km long, running from northeast to southwest), remote, and mountainous (up to 250 m {830 ft} in elevation) island that has as yet no development.

According to local legend, people had to travel the 120 km route from Ranong to Takua Pa on foot or on elephants before a coastal road was built. On the final stages of the journey, they used a wild herb known as "Bai Ra", found in the area around Phang Nga, to make a spicy curry dish to warm and sustain themselves on the march. "Bai Ra" was a highly-prized herb which may have influenced the name of Ko Ra.
