Kemijärvi is the northern-most town in Finland. It is also a municipality located in the province of Lapland.
Known for its beautiful waters and nature, the city is undergoing big structural changes as big companies have been abandoning the area. Population around 8000.
City has in recent years gained publicity by being the location for a popular national TV-series Taivaan Tulet.
There's a train station in Kemijärvi. Single connection from Rovaniemi runs daily (arrival ~9am, departure 7pm). Rovaniemi-Kemijärvi rails are being electrified and the possibility to transport your car to Kemijärvi is coming in ~2014. http://www.vr.fi/en/index.html
City center is quite compact, so you can get around quite well by walking. Some local hotels might rent out bicycles.
