Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, India. The center of an agricultural region along the banks of the Ganges River. Hotels: A local businessman, Puneet Dubey, has opened Kannauj's first real hotel. The Hotel Rajdhani is located on the GT Road, Saraimeera, Kannauj (one km south of the railway station). There are 16 rooms plus a restaurant. New construction as of 2013. Ph. 05694-213434, 213535. Website: www.hotel-rajdhani.com. Reasonable rates. Delicious organic vegetarian cooking. Things to do include seeing the Gaurshanker Temple and the Mughal era mosque. Also a walk through the narrow streets to the old perfume market is a pleasure. See perfume being distilled using traditional methods at the small local factories. The ruins of the fortress of Jaichand of Kannauj have been barely excavated. A few kilometers outside of town is a friendly and delightful Indian farming village of Udaitapur. The locals will show you their homes and the fields where they work. Kannauj is a real taste of rural India.
