Local residents in Kainuu, just like in most Finnish regions, are reliable, friendly and easy to get along with. They will gladly help you out when you need it, and arrange things for you if necessary. They will have converstions with you and others about common things, but like with most finns, it's propably bit hard to make deep friendship etc.. with them. Usually they rather keep their motions and presonal things to themselves, and prefer to leave others alone, and also want to be left alone. You should respect that, and try not to change their culture and them as human beings. Of course, like everywhere in world, there are exceptions and people are different. The culture in Kainuu is similar to one in Karjala region.

Like in most of Finland, the English language is widely known, as is Swedish, since they are compulsory taught languages in Finnish comprehensive schools. Since Kainuu region neighbours Russia, that language is in important position as residents from both countries visit eachother and co-operate together. It is widely discussed nowdays in Finland, should Russian be a compolsory language in Finnish schools instead of Swedish, at least in regions near the Russian border. Some residents can also speak German, and French also.

There are flights from Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Kajaani, and you can get to Kajaani centre and other municipalities by taxi from Kajaani airport. You can also get to Kainuu by bus from other major finnish towns/cities, through smaller municipalities. Finnish road network is advanced, and roads are in well shape. Many roads come to Kainuu or go through it.

Kainuu is peaceful, natural place, where is little or no major pollution problems at all. In fact, Kainuu is first regions in Finland to start take care of enviroment and nature, and stop consuming natural resources. Nature and outdoors are clearly visible through every municipality. Even the largest town's, Kajaani's town center is rounded by countryside and forest.
