Jianshui (建水县; Jeifsyu) is a city in Honghe prefecture, Yunnan province, China. It was historic center of the province and remains an important transportation crossroad.

Get in[edit]

Buses from Kunming run all day, costing just under ¥100. There are also buses at 9:30 and 10:30am from Jinghong.

Jianshui is a charming town of old buildings.

  • Chao Yang Lou (Old City Gate), which is now preserved on a roundabout in the middle of town.
  • Hutongs or 'old neighbourhoods' with cobbled streets and stone wells.
  • Temple of Confucius, Jianshui - one of the largest Confucian temples in China, after that of Qufu, Shandong, Confucius' home town.
  • Seventeen Span Bridge (pinyin shi qi kong qiao), a Ming Dynasty bridge outside of the town
  • The restored Qing Dynasty mansion and garden of a wealthy family.
  • Ancient Buddhist towers.

Jianshui is famous for its freshly wrapped stinky tofu. Near the West Gate, there are many small roasted tofu restaurants. They charge per piece eaten (counted by putting corn kernels in a bottle cap while you eat). You can stuff yourself silly for less than 50 yuan.
