Intramuros [1] (Latin: within the walls) is the oldest district of Manila, the Philippines' capital-city.

Originally known as Old Manila during Spanish Occupation, Intramuros was a former city itself enclosed by thick, high walls and moats situated along the southern banks of Pasig River. Intramuros was the seat of Spanish colonial rule in the East for almost four centuries and was the center of commerce, education, government and religion.

With World War II, however, Intramuros lost its old grandeur and glory. After surviving a number of earthquakes, typhoons, fires and wars through the centuries, efforts to preserve the Walled City and revive its illustrious past are stronger than ever. Intramuros is now recognized as the History Town of the Philippines, a priceless treasure to be shared with the world.

  • Kalesa - a horse-driven calash. you can find these in Fort Santiago. You may rent one with the driver acting as a tourist guide. Usually they wear green in color.
