Igarka
From Wikitravel
Igarka is a city in the extreme north of Krasnoyarsk (region). Its airport serves travelers heading to remote destinations in Taymyria and Evenkia. Igarka gained a certain infamy as the beginning of the 503rd Labor Camp's attempt, on Stalin's orders, to build a railway along the Arctic Circle to Salekhard in Yamalia. The project failed and thousands of the gulag laborers died in the process.
[edit] Get in
Igarka Airport is served by flights from Moscow and Krasnoyarsk. As the airport is on an island, you will require either an ice-bridge into town or a ferry ride.
In the summer it may be possible to arrive by cruise ship from Krasnoyarsk along the Yenisey River.
