City of Hyvinkää [1] (population 45,000) is small town in Southern Finland and conveniently located about 50 km from Finland's capital Helsinki. Hyvinkää is located along Helsinki-Tampere railroad. And highway 3 (E12) is passing very near. Location of Hyvinkää provides many opportunities to excercise in nature. The green and verdant city also offers various cultural experiences.

Hyvinkää’s Tourist Office is located in city hall, address Kutomokatu 1 and it's open Mon -Thu 8.00–16.00 Fri 8.00–15.00. The Tourist Office provides brochures and maps of Hyvinkää area and various destinations and cities across Finland. The services are free for all customers. You can find free brochures also from Prisma shopping center, Kauppakuja 2 (entrance near city hall).

History[edit]

Hyvinkää community was founded 1917 and it changed to town 1960. Before 1917 Hyvinkää was part of Nurmijärvi community.

By train[edit]

VR’s [2] suburban trains R, H and T operate to Hyvinkää from the Helsinki’s Central Railway Station. It’s 45-minutes train ride.

By bus[edit]

There are several lines operating from Helsinki to Hyvinkää. Most stops in bus station, some late buses just pass Hyvinkää by Highway 3 (E12). Duration ~1 to 1,5 hour. Depending if direct or not. And Hyvinkää has a nice, little public bus company called "Hyvinkään Liikenne". It has six lines and you can take a bus to almost everywhere in Hyvinkää. Trust me, I live in Hyvinkää.

Hyvinkää’s center is located two kilometers from highway 3 (E12). South side of Hyvinkää is road 25 that goes to Porvoo and Hanko.

  • Finnish Railway museum [3] - Address: Hyvinkäänkatu 9. Tickets 6€ (Adult) 2€ (Child 7-16yrs). See the website for opening hours. The museum is situated on a historically significant place - Station and train yard for Hanko-Hyvinkää railway from early 1870s.

You can get a special cachet on your letters and postcards if you mail them through the mailbox on the museum grounds.

  • Hyvinkää art museum [4] - Address: Hämeenkatu 3 D (2nd floor of Jussintori building).

Opening hours: Mon Closed, Tue-Thu 11-18, Fri-Sun 11-17. Art changes few times a year, most often local painters and sculptors. Tickets are around 3€, groups and students get a discount.

  • Willa shopping mall (Kauppakeskus Willa) [5] - The sixth biggest shopping mall in Finland. Willa is in the middle of Hyvinkää centrum and it's pretty new too, opened in 2012. Address: Hämeenkatu 9 Erto.png


  • Villa Arttu [6] - Address: Kankurinkatu 4-6.

Child and Youth culture center at Wanha Villatehdas. Open every day 12-16.

  • Valvilla - textile museum - Address: Kankurinkatu 4-6, Wanha Villatehdas, yard side.

Opening hours: Wed 12-15 or call beforehand. Tickets 1€. Museum tells the story of Valvilla textile plant, which was founded by Ossian Donner in 1892. It processed wool for almost 100 years and grew to one of the largest and most diverse textile plants in Finland. The plant has been closed for some time and the surrounding areas are being built as housing.

  • Hyvinkää - artist community [7] - Address: Vaiveronkatu 10.

Gallery with local art. Closed on Mondays.

The city is surrounded by nature and therefore it provides people who enjoy sports excellent opportunities to exercise for example in the Sveitsi nature park, swimming pool or ski centre. There are also many interesting sports associations in Hyvinkää. And spend time in large and new shopping mall called Willa (Kauppakeskus Willa).

In Willa shopping mall, there are about 120 shops and restaurants. And there are other shops in the centrum of Hyvinkää.

There is McDonald's really close the Railway Station. And there is a finnish fast food restaurant called "Hesburger" in the centrum of Hyvinkää. And there are a lot of pizza- and kebab restaurants in Hyvinkää.

In Willa shopping mall, there are about eighteen nice restaurants and cafes. If you want a sandwich in Hyvinkää, there are two Subways too in hyvinkää.

There are really much bars and nightclubs on Uudenmaankatu. That's close to the railway station. There are places called Amarillo, Level 5, Zoom, Medicin Man and many more...
