Hallesche Verkehrs-AG (HAVAG) is the local surface street tram. It pases most major attractions downtown and will take you to and from the main train station. Tickets are available at the office in the Marktplatz, from vending machines or from the drivers. Tickets from the drivers are more expensive, and they generally don't like to be bothered.

Make sure you try some döner kebap while you're there. It's heavily Germanized Turkish food. Halle has some of the best in the country. Ask the locals where the best place to eat it is.

Leipziger Straße is the main shopping street in downtown Halle. It branches off of the Southeast corner of the Marktplatz. There you will find many retail shops and chain fast food restaurants.

  • Café Noire, Kleine Ulrichstraße 30. It is by far the best bar/cafe on Kleine Ulrichstraße.  edit

  • Kempinski Hotel Rotes Ross. Franckestrasse 1, 06100 Halle/Saale, phone +49-0345-2922-0". Four Star Hotel aimed mostly towards business travelers but also very good base for tourists since it is only 10 minutes by foot from the mains station and sits right in the middle of the pedestrian district (Leipziger Strasse). Feels like a small Grand Hotel and the rooms are very individually decorated. Has a small fitness room, a sauna, and a whirlpool in the basement. Doubles start from 69 Euro incl. breakfast and their deluxe rooms go up to over 120 Euros. Breakfast is done as a buffet and selection of Cheese, Sausage, Breads, Cereals, and Fruits is very nice. Has an italian Restaurant and 24 hours room service.
