People in this area of Cuba have had very little contact with foreigners, and often display a great deal of curiosity over, for example, digital cameras. People here, especially the younger generation, love to hear about the outside world.

This place is essentially dull.

There is a parade ground with monuments to the Revolution, opposite the Hotel Islazul, Guantanamo city. It is possible to arrange tours to the American military base through this hotel for around $40. However, as the author found, this service is not always available.

The local 'Hotel Islazul,' in the North of Guantanamo city, provides basic hospitality and meals. They claim no responsibility for lost possessions, and provide no safe. Please bear in mind that many Cubans don't earn as much as $30 a month. The cisterns of the lavatories provide good hiding places.
