Gravesend

Gravesend is in the county of Kent in the South East region of England. Gravesend is a historic town located on the river Thames, opposite Tilbury in Essex. Since the late 14th century passengers have been transported to and from London by water on a "Tilt Boat". It is the final resting place of Pocahontas, whose memorial can be seen.

By Train[edit]

Gravesend train station is located in the centre of town between Clive Road and Rathmore Road. From here you can get to and from central London in around 50 minutes. Trains run between Gravesend and London's Charing Cross, Waterloo East, Cannon Street and London Bridge stations.

Since 2009 there are express train services between Gravesend and London St Pancras International taking 23 minutes. A single ticket from London to Gravesend will cost around £11-15 depending on the service you get.

Ebbsfleet International train station is located 3 miles west of Gravesend town centre with the HS1 train connecting it to Gravesend. From here you can travel to Brussels, Paris, Lille and Calais in continental Europe on the Eurostar.

Most of the main tourist sites, restaurants, bars and shops are within walking distance of the town centre. To travel further afield taxis are available from the taxi rank at the end of New Road (near the Tesco).

  • Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara. The largest single site Sikh complex in Europe, this magnificent Gurdwara is the place of worship for the sizeable Sikh community in Gravesend. A place grand in scale, accommodating 1200 worshippers, and accomplished in its detail, with hand crafted marble, stonework, colourful tiling and stained glass windows, the Gurdwara and its people leave a strong impression on all who visit. Located a short walk east of the town centre on Khalsa Avenue.  edit

Gravesend town centre offers a lot for shoppers with a mix of well known high street brands and smaller independent shops. Most shops are along Kings Street and the High Street as well as in the St Georges and Thamesgate shopping centres.

Gravesend is home to one of the oldest markets still operational in the UK, dating back to 1268.

The usual selection of fast food chains are available in the town centre including McDonalds (open 24 hours at weekends), Burger King and Subway.

  • The George, Queen Street. Serving up a wide selections of beers and spirits, and with a lively evening atmosphere, an evening in the George is not to be missed. If you happen to be in Gravesend during the month of July, you may be lucky enough to meet local character 'benzo' in the George, during an annual drinking festival  edit
  • The New Inn, Queen Street. Enjoy a pint of local favourite 'Dartford Wobbler' over a game of pool. On friday and saturday night there is a dj spinning the latest tunes  edit

Get out[edit]

Take a short drive or train journey from Gravesend and you can access the serene countryside and beautiful coastal vistas of Kent. Canterbury, Dover, Hastings, Sheerness and Margate are all within an hours drive of Gravesend. There are also train connections to many places in Kent from Gravesend train station.
