Furthermore the city of Sao Filipe is a place to visit, the natural swimming pool La Salina and a panoramic tour around the island will complete the visit.

Some impressions and a list of good hikes you find on Creole Guide on Fogo

A trip to Fogo is not complete without a visit to the otherworldly Chã das Caldeiras including, for the adventurous, an ascent to the 2829m peak Pico de Fogo, more easily to the Pico Pequeno.

To climb up the Pico do Fogo you are obliged to take a local guide because of safety reasons. He shows you what's to know. You need about 3 to 5 hours to go up, starting in the early morning before sunrise. You will see the shadow of the volcano on the bordeira. Most people are able to mount, because it's a long way but not too hard.

The charming main town of São Filipe with it's sobrado architecture is worth exploring for a day or so on your way through.

On the north coast of the island is the town of Mosteiros.

You find a nice hike from Chã das Caldeiras downwards to Mosteiros though the green side of the island.

Other destinations[edit]

Get in[edit]

Regular flights to Fogo from Praia and Sal landing in São Filipe. Ask for a seat on the right side of the plane for the best view of the volcano.

There is a ferry from Praia to São Filipe, mostly leaving Praia at 3 p.m. Back Fogo to Praia starts mostly at 9 a.m.. For boats leaving São Filipe, the office is in the square opposite to Pousada Bela Vista. For flights, the TACV office is just off the same square.

Be careful:

  • the boats don't go, if the sea is turbulent

  • the flights are often changed in time and/or canceled and/or two flights of a day are merged together. Information of TACV often not send. So confirm operation some days before.

Get around[edit]
