Fairfax is a suburb of Washington, D.C. in the state of Virginia with roots dating back to the 1700's. While it was once considered a more distant suburb, it is now considered a close in area when compared to the surrounding exurban counties. Fairfax as a "suburb" was developed in the 1950's meaning it cotains some charachter and an identity of its own not often found in the much newer and largely homogenous exurban areas in Northern Virginia.
