No great public transport. Driving in is usually not a problem, although there will be a couple minutes of stop and go traffic during rush hour.

The Downeaster (Amtrak) makes a stop in Exeter, making it accessible by train from Boston, Haverhill (MA), and Portland (ME).

  • Phillips Exeter Academy, founded in 1781, is known as one of the premier secondary schools in the world. It is home to the Class of 1942 library, designed by Louis Kahn.

[edit][add listing] Do

There are often concerts at Phillips Exeter Academy, [1], that are free and open to the public.

The Ioka Theater has concerts, old movies, film festivals, in an old-style theater setting. [2]

[edit][add listing] Buy

There are some cute little shops on Water Street: clothing stores, gift shops, a toy store, a music store.

[edit][add listing] Eat

All of the downtown restaurants are moderately priced. A good option for vegetarians/vegans is the Green Earth Cafe at the Blue Moon Market, on Clifford Street off of Water Street.

In addition to the Blue Moon, the Green Bean and The Loaf & Ladle offer good homemade soup and sandwich options.

For casual dining try Margaritas (Mexican), Pan Thai II (Thai), or the Pine Garden on Route 108. For finer dining try 11 Water Street, Taverne at River's Edge, or The Exeter Inn. The Town Line Grill on Route 27 (High Street) also offers top notch fare in a semi-casual setting.

[edit][add listing] Drink

  • The Ioka, the historic movie theatre offers a lively club scene on certain weekends.
  • Shaker's Lounge provides an old lounge feel, good food, and a good selection of drinks. A pool table is also available.

[edit][add listing] Sleep

Outside of town, there are some chain hotels that offer decent deals. In town, you'll find some pretty expensive rooms at pretty little inns-- most notable the Exeter Inn, which has a great Sunday brunch.
