El Kef (or Le Kef, Arabic الكاف‎) is a small city in north west Tunisia. The city is built onto the southern face of the Jebel Dyr Mountain. This is part of the Tebersouk Mountains, the eastern end of the High Atlas Mountains. El Kef is very laid back and offers a very authentic taste of Tunisia with a few excellent sites to see in the city and a good location for day trips to the area around.

[edit] Get in

The city can be reached by car, bus, or louage (shared taxi) from Tunis directly (3.5 hours). As in all of Tunisia, louages can be taken either directly or inderectly to and from any cities. The bus/louage station is located about a ten minute walk downhill from the city centre, Place de l'Independance.

[edit] Get around

Once in El Kef, there are two options for getting around the city, walking and taxis. The taxis are everywhere and very cheap ( bus station to oldtown centre less than 1TD ) but due to the small size of the city, walking is the best option and - heat of the day dependant - often the most convenient.

The main attraction in El Kef is the Byzantine kasbah that is clearly visible from most of the city. It sits near the top of the city, rising out of the old medina. The site has been occupied by a series of fortresses dating back to the 5th century BC and currently contains both Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. Admission is technically free, but a tip is generally expected from the gate keeper at the kasbah's entrance. The site's last military use was back in the early 1950's as a jail for Habib Bourguiba, the first president of the Tunisian Republic.

Small cafes are found throughout the city and are often filled with local men.

As for alcohol, there is only one licensed restaurant in all of El Kef. The Restaurant Venus serves both Tunisian beer and wines. Beers should cost you around 4 TND.

[edit][add listing] Sleep

There are an assorted number of places to stay in the city; however, they are all located right around the Place de l'Independance.

Of note is the Residence Venus, a small pension on Rue Mouldi Khamessi (phone 204-183). The place is very clean and run by a cheerful family. Almost all the rooms have private washrooms, a few having semi-private washrooms, and breakfast that is included with the room. The price can be negotiated depending on the time of year and the length of your stay, but usually runs about 20 to 25 TND. It's worth checking that your room has a working heater in the winter months.

  • Travel 60 km south-west to climb Jugurtha's Table. This large mesa that rises out of the landscape close to the Algerian border has a lunar landscape atop and massive fissures to jump across, making an interesting natural destination to visit whilst in the region. Head first for the village of Kalaat Es-Senan, and from there follow the road from the center of the village around the base of the mountain, before climbing the steps to the summit.
  • Visit nearby Dougga, 50km to the east, with its World Heritage listed collection of Roman ruins.
  • Drive north into the hills to visit the 'Alpine' town of Ain Draham.
