Doi Tung Royal Villa

Doi Tung is a mountain in the northern part of Chiang Rai Province, at the northernmost tip of Thailand.

By bus[edit]

Bus from Muang Chiang Rai - Mae Sai. 35bt each way. Get off at Ban Huay Krai. Purple or blue minibus/pickup to the bus station Doi Tung. 400bt up to 10 people or motobike lift 140bt per person, drop off and pick up later.
Call 053-667-433 the chartered 750 (roundtrip) seats 12 people, or $ 60 for 12 each fare minibus to take people out to Doi Tung.

The main area of shops, royal villa, gardens and hall of inspiration are close and easy to see in about 4 hours but phra that doi tung is about 9km away and there is no transport to get there so you have to walk which makes it a difficult hike for the day.


  • Wat Phra That Doi Tung. Dating to the 10th century, this temple has a stupa reputed to contain the Buddha's collarbone, making it a major site of pilgrimage. Located atop Doi Tung itself at an altitude of nearly 2000 meters, it probably has the most fantastic view of all temples in Thailand.
  • Doi Tung Royal Villa - final residence of the Princess Mother (mother of King Bhumibol), located at kilometre 12 on highway 1149, to the west of highway 1. This magnificent villa was built on the mountain overlooking the surrounding hills and valleys in a unique mix of Swiss and Lanna architectural styles.

  • Mae Fah Luang Gardens are a botanical park located on the slopes below the royal villa. Flowers and plants grow among rock formations.There is also a cafe where you can enjoy your beverage with the beautiful view of the mountains. You can also buy organic tea leaves from here.



Ticket prices are 90 bht for each of the 4 sites or you can buy a ticket for all 4 sites for 220 bht.

Food at the cafeteria and shops is somewhat expensive so if you want a bit cheaper day then pack your own lunch. There are day market down the road a few hundred meters where you can get cheaper foods etc.

Restaurant on Doi Tung is very renowned for fresh vegetable salad and have winter vegetables to choose and buy various kinds. Such as tomatoes, especially in the winter. Including fresh fried oyster mushroom is known as well. Visitors should also try fresh coffee Arabica varieties of the famous Doi Tung. The coffee is excellent quality. Through seed selection standards. The smell and taste are tested before sale. This ensures that the coffee tastes and smell best. Macadamia are grown as opium substitute coffee Arabica varieties. Doi Tung Development Project has hired people to collect seeds and juice into a sauce ,and available product flavors. The packaging is beautiful. In addition, all of the above.
