This region is composed solely of mountainous terrain. The mid-level Monashees mark the western gateway, and the majestic Rocky Mountains mark the east.

The region is bisected east-west by the Trans Canada Highway, and this stretch is arguably the most scenic of its entire length. Exploring by car is the only reasonable way to enjoy this region. There is however, Greyhound coach service along the highway connecting Calgary, Kamloops, and points between.
