Chupei, also spelled Jhubei (竹北; Zhúběi), is a the administrative capital of Hsinchu County.
Jhubei is primarily a residential area for Taipei and science park workers, it has a larger than average foreign population due to the high number of English schools. It is also a very new area and still developing. While very modern it lacks a lot of services associated with a city and residents often travel to Hsinchu for shopping, cinemas and drinking. Jhubei has a few nice parks and an excellent running/cycling route along the river. Jhubei also has excellent transport links with tour buses to Hsinchu county and a shuttle service between the TRA and HSR. There are plenty of good western/Korean/Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants on Guangming 6th street, just don't plan on eating after 9pm. There is the older part of Jhubei around the train station which provides more traditional food, this is also cheaper, open later but speaking Mandarin is a must. The east of jhubei is very new and mostly limited to houses but new businesses and places to eat are opening all the time.
