Chopta is a village, largely known among trekking enthusiasts as a base camp for Tungnath and Chandrashila trek. It is one of the easiest access to 4000 mts elevation with a mesmerising view of more than 40 Himalayan peaks. As a place, it has little to no access to electricity, public transport or cellphone signals. Life stops here and you are on your own time.
By bus, you can come as far as Rudraprayag. You can hire a taxi for Chopta from taxi stand here. One more option is to go up to Ukhimath. You can get a bus for Ukhimath easily as it is on the way to Kedarnath. From Ukhimath, there is one bus for Chopta in the morning. Exact timing and fare not known.
If you are coming from Rishikesh, follow NH58 till Rudraprayag. Take NH109 (Kedarnath route) for a while and take a right turn for Ukhimath. You don't need to go to Ukhimath all the way to reach here. There is a diversion in between which sends you to Duggalbittha, the general camping location at Chopta. This diversion is also the last point of phone signal you may get unless you have Vodafone.
Rishikesh to Chopta is nearly 200 Km. Most of the route passes through twisty mountain roads so it takes nearly 7-8 hours to cover this distance. Route will follow as - Rishikesh -> Devprayag -> Uttarakhand Srinagar -> Rudraprayag -> Chopta
Public transport is not available, so you need your own vehicle to get around. Or use you feet. The whole area is very scenic. Enchanting Himalayas every time you look up and far stretched green meadows (also called bugyals) covered with small flowers, every time you look down. View of the himalayas and the valley vary with month of the year. Chopta sees heavy snowfall during winters. Temperature during evenings drops quickly. Please be prepared. Also, carry a torch and water bottle.
