The Central North Island of New Zealand is rugged wilderness country. Sparsely populated, it is a region of small, sometimes remote rural settlements set amongst the hills and mountains.

Located in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand and 8km south of the town centre, next to New Zealand's largest lake, Lake Taupo, Taupo Airport is the gateway to central North Island.

Newmans Coach Lines operates a premium sightseeing tours throughout the North Island.

InterCity Coachlines is New Zealand's national coach company and operates over 150 services to more than 600 destinations nationwide.

The Overlander train passes through the central North Island on its way to Auckalnd (northbound Train) and Wellington (southbound train).
