• Abovyan — a relatively large "satellite city" of Yerevan, through which you're bound to pass if heading north
• Armavir — the capital of Armavir province is an ancient one, believed to have been founded in the early 20th century B.C. by King Argishtis I of Urartu, and the one-time capital of the Urartian Empire
• Artashat — former capital of Armenia (2nd century B.C.–5th century A.D.), located by the stunningly situated Khor Virap Monastery
• Echmiadzin — the spiritual capital of Armenia, home to the Armenian Catholicos, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site
• Hrazdan — the capital and largest city of in Kotayk Province is also home to the Makravank Monastery

• Mount Aragats — the highest mountain in Armenia, and a generally a great place for a volcano hike
• Khor Virap — the most photographed place in Armenia, a spectacular monastery atop a huge rock, right at the border, at the foot of Mount Ararat
• Erebuni Fortress — the ruins of an impressive mountaintop fortress, built in the early 8th Century B.C., with 360 degree views over the capital and the surrounding mountains and plains
• Geghard Monastery — arguably the most awe-inspiring site in Armenia, an 11th century Monastery cut from the rock on the side of a high mountain gorge, the legendary home of the Geghard Spear, which pierced Jesus upon the cross (clearly, this too is a UNESCO World Heritage site)
• Zvartnots Cathedral — another UNESCO World Heritage site, the impressive ruins of a 7th century Armenian cathedral, right by the international airport
