Catbalogan City is the capital city of Samar, in Eastern Visayas, Philippines. It is the center of arts and culture in the whole Samar Island. The city is traversed by Maharlika Highway, the national arterial road connecting the Philippines end-to-end. The city connects to the regional capital, Tacloban City.
Shared mini-vans (e.g. 'Van Vans') from Tacloban cost 120 Pesos and take about 2.5 hours. You can ask the mini-vans where to stop. Getting out at the Van Vans station puts your in the middle of town near to hotels / pension houses etc.
Although there are approximately 103,000 people living here, the city center is compact and easy to walk around. This is where you will find most things that you need such as restaurants, accommodations, ATMs etc. Pedal powered rick-shaws can be found on all streets. For short journeys around the city expect to pay approximately 8 Pesos. For longer journeys, motorized tricycles can be found throughout the city. There is normally a line of them opposite the large park on the road to Tacloban. Price negotiated with driver before departure.
Catbalogan City is a nice, friendly quiet little city to relax in with hospitable people, amazing caves, stunning sunsets, great seafood, waterfalls, nature, etc all around. Rizal Park, fronting City Hall, features the most unique Rizal monument in the world and is the focal point in the evenings where kids learn dance routines, play basketball games and couples promenading.
