The Buenos Aires Province has become a producer of premium wines during the first decade of the 21st century. Vineyards are located at the southern part of the province, specially around Médanos (40 km from Bahia Blanca on Ruta Nacional 22). The activity was pioneered in lands previously dedicated to garlic and pastures by Al Este Bodega y Viñedos.
The name of the company "Al Este" means, “to the East” and is reflective of the fact that its wines come from a new wine producing area in Argentina, east of all traditional vineyard growing areas which are located in the Andes.
[edit] Enotourism
Al Este Bodega y Viñedos is located in Médanos (Km 732 on Ruta Nacional 22) and is open to the public for visits on week days and weekends. The visits include the vineyards and winery, including wine tastings at the cellars and an opportunity to buy wines at wholesale prices. The vineyard and winery with state of the art infrastructure and technology including the wine cellar where wines are aged in French and American oak.
Al Este Bodega y Vinedos offers high quality wines including Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tannat, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc under the Al Este and Terrasabbia brands.
[edit] The terroir
The Médanos terroir has unique conditions ideal for quality vineyards. The soil is very rich, and given its latitude (around parallel 39º South, where the Pampa region and Patagonia converge) vineyards receive long hours of sun light, which result in grapes with high sugar contents. Windy springs help develop thicker skins that contribute to the intense color of these wines.
