Bourtange

Bourtange is a walled village in Groningen, Netherlands, near the German border. For several hundred years, Bourtange was a stronghold of strategic significance, which was on a trade route between the Netherlands and Germany. Beceause of the drying up of the surrounding swamps and the further development of war techniques, the village lost its role in the 19th century.
