Banten [1] is a province of Indonesia on the western tip of the island of Java. It was once an independent sultanate. The head of government in Banten is a governor ("gubernur"). There are 4 regencies ("Kabupaten") and 4 municipalities ("Kota") in Banten. The regencies are Lebak, Pandeglang, Serang, and Tangerang, while the municipalities are Tangerang, Cilegon, Tangerang Selatan, Serang.

The population of Banten is 9.658.951 people in 2008. The area is 8800 sq. km. The density is 1035 people/sq. km.
