Ashmore and Cartier Islands
Ashmore and Cartier Islands are a territory off the northwest coast of Australia. These uninhabited islands came under Australian authority in 1931; formal administration began two years later. Ashmore Reef supports a rich and diverse avian and marine habitat; in 1983 it became a National Nature Reserve. Cartier Island, a former bombing range, is now a marine reserve. [edit] Understand[edit] TalkAs the islands are administered by Australia, the official language is English, but the most common language spoken is Indonesian, as Indonesian fishermen come onto the West Islet to take on fresh water. [edit] Get inIt is a protected area so basically, no one can really get in the island. Except the traditional fishers of the area. A permit from the Australian government is needed for tourists/civilians to set foot in the islands.
