Appenzell is a canton in Northeastern Switzerland, comprising the two half cantons of Appenzell outer-rhodes, and Appenzell inner-rhodes.

Get in[edit]

Catch a train from Gossau or Saint Gallen (about 40 min). The train station for the Appenzellerbahn is separate from the normal trains as the track width is different.

By train[edit]

By Bus[edit]

Get around[edit]

By car[edit]

The entire Region of Appenzell has a very developed infrastructure and one can reach all villages by car. In wintertime roads can be covered with snow or ice so adjusting speed to road conditions is important.

By train[edit]

The Appenzellerbahn is the major private train company operating in the area. The network is quite extensive and frequent trains run from Appenzell to different villages in the area. Villages that aren't served by train are always connected by bus so getting around in the area by public transport is really easy.

By cablecar[edit]

There are several cablecars to local mountains and while they offer a nice excursion in their own right, they can also serve as a mode of transport for hikes in the area.

See[edit][add listing]

Enjoy the lovely pre Alpine mountain scenery. The entire Canton of Appenzell is dotted with typical Appenzell farming houses and hiking trails. Since the area doesn't have steep mountains, besides the Alpstein range, there are also a lot of easier hiking options available. As is usual in Switzerland hiking routes are very well sign posted and one can easily find its way.

Several villages, such as Appenzell, Urnäsch, Gais, Heiden and Trogen all offer beautiful local architecture and local museums provide an insight to the history of the region.

In the Alpstein range there are several cable cars running to some of the local peaks. The highest one is Säntis, 2502 metres above sea level. A restaurant with terrace offers spectacular views over the entire Region of Northeastern Switzerland and into neighbouring Germany and Austria.

Entrance in the cheesefactory and watching cheese being made is free of charge. There are several other activities including guided tours and events. Check the homepage for up to date information  edit
  • Ride on the Appenzellerbahn, (Start a ride from Gossau, St.Gallen or anywhere within the canton Appenzell), [2]. A good way to see the Canton of Apenzell is taking a ride on the Appenzellerbahn. As the Appenzellerbahn is made for narrow curves, it is slower which makes it perfect for watching the scenery. Check timetables on sbb.ch for the English version.  edit
  • Säntis Schwebebahn, [3]. Visit the highest mountain in the area the Säntis. A cablecar runs to this impressive mountain all year round from Schwägalp, which can be reached by car or bus from Urnäsch. In summertime the mountain can be used as a starting point for hiking tours in the Alpstein range and in winter the experienced skiier can ski down Säntis through unspoiled nature. Take caution of avalanche risks though!  edit
