Amsterdam and Amstelland is a region within North-Holland in the West of the Netherlands. Amsterdam is a tourist magnet and the dominant city in the area. The Amstelland south of it's urban area is off the beaten path to most visitors, as most towns there are planned residential areas with daily commuters to Amsterdam. West of it lies the region Meerlanden with numerous polders, canals, and lakes, such as the Westeinderplassen. Haarlemmermeer is the largest municipality there and has been formed by land reclamation, as it previously was a big lake. Now Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located in that area, as well as some medium-sized commuter towns.
