Ambato

From Wikitravel
Jump to: navigation, search

Ambato is a city in the central Andean Highlands of Ecuador.

Understand[edit]

Ambato was destroyed by an earthquake in 1949 and the rebuilding process was quick and efficient. Therefore it lacks the colonial charm of other Southamerican cities.

Get in[edit]

Ambato is a fairly major transport hub. Buses run from Quito (2.5 hours), Baños ($1, 1 hour), Cuenca ($6, 6 hours), and many others.

Buy[edit][add listing]

At the "mercado artesanal" (Juan Benigno Vela) beautiful crafts can be bought. They are slightly cheaper compared to Banos and Quito but be aware that this is a dangerous part of the city.

For leather-goods you can go to Quisapincha which is about a 20minute bus ride above Ambato. Generally good quality and really good prices.

Salasaca about 20 minutes outside as a market with indigenous crafts- really low prices.
